Adolescent Gynecology Q & A

What is adolescent gynecology?

A young woman's body begins to undergo some pretty major changes during the teen years and even the preteen years for some girls. Adolescent gynecology is focused on the care of teens and preteens, taking into account their unique needs as well as their concerns about visiting a gynecologist and receiving gynecological care.

Why should my daughter see a gynecologist while she's still in her teens?

Seeing a gynecologist during the early teen years is important to help your daughter understand the changes and issues she's facing, to have her concerns addressed and questions answered, and to ensure she understands the health risks that are associated with being sexually active. Adolescent gynecologists can also help young women feel more confident about their bodies and enjoy optimal health and wellness.

What happens during an exam with an adolescent gynecologist?

Once your child's medical history is taken, her weight, height and blood pressure will be measured and recorded. She may also be asked to provide a urine sample for testing. During the exam portion, you may be asked to leave the room for a short period of time to enable your daughter to speak freely about topics which may be a little uncomfortable for her to discuss in front of you. A physical exam will focus primarily on the external genitalia and belly areas. Once the exam is complete, both your and your daughter will be able to discuss any treatment recommendations that may be made as well as to ask questions.

Should my daughter have the HPV vaccine?

That's a choice for you and your daughter, but the vaccine is recognized as an important protection against the human papillomavirus, an extremely common virus that can increase the chances of certain cancers. To be most effective, it should be administered before your daughter is sexually active.
